About
You are going to have a CT Scan. First of all you must know that this is not a painful procedure. Maybe you will have to receive a contrast material. You should tell your doctor about previous allergies, asthma, or anaphylactic reactions, because you can develop an allergic response at the contrast substance. Depending on the things doctors are looking for, you will be asked to swallow the substance or it will injected into your veins, or, sometimes, it will be delivered by enema. None of these techniques is painful, maybe just a little unpleasant. Some people are experiencing some itching, a metallic taste in the back of the mouth or a brief sensation of heat in your arm or in your entire body. If these problems persist more than a few minutes you should tell your doctor about them. Also tell your doctor if you are experiencing any trouble breathing.
You should also inform your doctor about any kidney problems you are having. The contrast material can be dangerous for some already injured kidneys.
You might be asked not to eat for six hours before the test, because the food in your belly can interfere with the image. Probably you will have to take off your clothes and wear a hospital gown. Also you will have to remove your jewelries, hair pins and other metallic objects because they are opaque to the X-rays used for CT Scan.
You can undergo a CT Scan no matter if you have a metal implant in your heart or somewhere in your bones or joints. It will harder for the doctors to see your lesions but you won’t be in any danger (as in MRI).
It’s very important for you to tell your doctor if you are or might be pregnant. X-rays are very dangerous for your fetus and only the doctor can decide if you can undergo a CT Scan.
Some people have a disorder called claustrophobia. This means they are afraid of little, enclosed, and confined spaces. If you were diagnosed with this disorder or if you are feeling anxiety and panic in elevators, you should talk with your doctor before the CT Scan. You might have problems because you will have to lie still on a table in a very little tunnel. You should know you are in no danger what so ever, but sometimes the fear is overwhelming and your doctors will have to terminate the scanning procedure prematurely.
If your child is having the test you should know that the doctors may give him a sedative to keep him or her still and calm.
