Children
I believe children should never have cancer. But they do. No matter how hard is to believe your child has cancer, this may happen. Remember one thing: your child needs you. He or she can’t fight alone. But together you can win this battle and you will see your child growing, getting married, having children and aging. The biggest issue here is to understand the fact that nothing will be the same again. Maybe yesterday you had a perfectly healthy child, maybe today what seemed to be a minor problem became the biggest problem on earth: cancer. The diagnosis may come as a complete shock for the parents, in fact for the entire family and, sometimes, everybody needs a little time to cope with the idea. But remember: the time is short. If you want your child to survive, you have to start the treatment as soon as possible. Some parents tend to blame themselves for their child’s cancer. In this moment, doctors can’ tell you if you did or didn’t do something wrong. Parents have to understand they are not responsible for their child’s cancer. Do not lose precious time blaming yourself or blaming each other. Nobody is guilty.
What do you have to do?
• Look for the best medical centre. There are in USA and around the world places for almost every type of childhood cancer. Find the most appropriate one and take your child there. Find a way to pay for the treatment. First, see what your insurance coverage is, then use every way to raise the money you need for food, travel, lodging away from home, co-payments and items not covered by insurance. Accept help from your family, from friends and neighbors, sell a property you don’t need, but not the house you are living in. Your child needs comfort and is not to be moved in a new place.
• Try to find everything you can about your child’s disease. You can ask me if you want and I promise I will help you with all the information I can find. It’s important to choose the sources very carefully, because there are people who will try to mislead you in order to sell you all kinds of miraculous pills.
• Do everything your child’s doctor says. It’s very important for your child to take the treatment, to eat properly, to make all the recommended tests. Explain your child every test he or she will undergo and persuade him/her to accept it. Also explain your child how the pills will cure him/her.
• Try to find a clinical trial for your child. Maybe this will be the marvelous treatment.
• Do not drop out, hope every day, fight every day.
• Spend time with your child, talk with him/her, give him/her little gifts, play with your child and enjoy every day.
