What is CT Scan?
First of all, CT Scan or CAT Scan means Computed Axial Tomography and it is a medical imaging method using X-rays. Doctors use CT Scan for diagnosing a lot of diseases, cancer being one of them. On a CT Scan your internal organs can be seen with many details, permitting the doctor to see tumors and other abnormal things growing in your body. For example, a CT scan of your abdomen will show the bones, the muscles, as well as your liver, stomach, intestines, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands and blood vessels — all with a high degree of precision. The machine used for CT Scam is a large, doughnut-shaped with a hole in the center. In that hole there is a table sliding backwards and forwards through the doughnut. During the procedure you have to lie still on this table.
You have to know that the machine is using X-rays, which means you have to be careful with your exposure. Your doctor knows the risks and the benefits and he/she will recommend you a CT Scan only when the benefits are greater than the risks. If you believe you can be pregnant, you should tell your doctor about that, because X-rays can hurt your baby very badly. You should tell your doctor about previous CT Scans and X-rays exposure and let him decide when you should take a CT Scan. Also tell your doctor if you experienced any allergies in your past, because CT Scans rely on intravenously administered contrast agents in order to provide superior image quality.
